Soft Focus: Blurring Makeup for a Filtered Finish

Blur the evidence. Keep the skin.

Soft Focus: Blurring Makeup for a Filtered Finish

Some makeup does not cover more; it makes what is already there look quieter. Primers, powders, tints and finishing products that soften the appearance of pores, texture or shine without turning skin into a flat sheet of beige. The finish we want is filtered, not erased.

Ten products from the optical side of makeup. Three primers, one brightening, one radiance-locking and one pore-filling, a tinted primer with SPF, a color base from Japan that corrects tone before anything else goes on, a foundation stick that blurs rather than covers, two loose powders including the one that made the word mineral mean something, a hyaluronic powder that does not dry, and a French compact that costs a hundred and forty dollars and is worth reading about even if you never buy it.

A little optical correction goes further than another layer of coverage. Keep the layer thin, concentrate it where texture or shine is most distracting, and keep dimension everywhere else. The target is softened, not flattened.
