The Inside Job: Supplements With Skin Ambitions

Ten things you swallow for the sake of your face, read the way we read a serum: by the label, not the promise.

The Inside Job: Supplements With Skin Ambitions

Everything else on The Shelf goes on the skin. This page is for what goes in, which is a different kind of product with a different kind of evidence, and the place where beauty marketing gets furthest ahead of what anyone can show. So a rule before the list: these are dietary supplements, not medicines. They do not treat anything, we do not say they do, and if you are pregnant, on medication or managing a condition, the person to ask is your doctor, not a website.

Ten products, chosen the way we choose serums. Each one publishes what is in it, and the ingredient is the argument. Two from the Advanced Nutrition Programme range that jane iredale brings to the US, a fern-extract softgel from the sunscreen house, a synbiotic capsule with its strains named, a one-a-day built on grape seed and melon, a ceramide powder you stir into water, the hair-and-nails classic French pharmacies have stocked for decades, a drinkable multivitamin, a women's formula written for the years around menopause, and the four-capsule daily from the laser brand that costs more than most skincare.

Supplements are slow, individual and hard to see in a mirror. That is why the marketing works so hard. Where a brand has run a study we say so. Where it has run a photoshoot, we say that too. Pick one, take it for three months, and judge it the way the products on The Long Game are judged: by the calendar.

Some links below are affiliate links. If you buy through them, SkinSourcer may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. It never changes what we pick or what you pay.

jane iredale Skin Accumax (60 capsules)
01

jane iredale Skin Accumax (60 capsules)

Supplements United Kingdom Approx. $75

The Advanced Nutrition Programme capsule that jane iredale brings to the US, and the most specific product on this page: vitamins A, C and E plus DIM, a compound identified in broccoli, in a patented combination the brand positions for blemish-prone skin. It is a dietary supplement, described here as one. The label is unusually frank about the commitment: four capsules a day for at least fourteen weeks, and it is not for pregnancy, planned pregnancy, breastfeeding or anyone under sixteen.

  • Every active named with its form
  • A dose and a timeline on the label, not a vibe
  • The brand tells you who should not take it
  • Pairs with the Skin Omegas below, which is how the range is sold
Texture
Capsules. Four a day with meals for the first fourteen weeks, then two, per the label.
Key ingredients
Vitamin A (retinyl palmitate) · Vitamin C · Vitamin E · Diindolylmethane (DIM)
Fragrance

jane iredale Skin Omegas (60 capsules)
02

jane iredale Skin Omegas (60 capsules)

Supplements United Kingdom Approx. $60

The other half of the Advanced Nutrition Programme pairing, and the easiest supplement here to explain: fish oil for EPA and DHA, evening primrose oil for GLA, a little vitamin A, and a serving-size panel that states the milligrams. The brand's claim is about maintaining the skin's lipid layer and a smoother, more luminous look. It is the one product on this page that a person might already be taking under a plainer label, and the panel lets you compare.

  • Milligrams of EPA, DHA and GLA on the panel
  • Highly purified fish oil, per the brand
  • Two capsules, one meal, done
  • The cheapest way into the range
Texture
Softgel capsules. Two a day with a meal.
Key ingredients
Omega-3 EPA and DHA from purified fish oil · Omega-6 GLA from evening primrose oil · Vitamin A
Fragrance
Unflavoured capsule. Fish oil inside, so not for the fish-averse.

The sensible one. If you take a fish oil already, check the panel before switching.

The Nue Co. Skin Filter (30 capsules)
03

The Nue Co. Skin Filter (30 capsules)

Supplements United Kingdom Approx. $45

The one-a-day capsule from the London supplement brand that names its blend: SkinAx2, a proprietary combination of grape seed, melon concentrate, zinc and vitamin C, with amla, pine bark, camu camu and beta-carotene behind it. The brand cites its own thirty-day study for brightness and elasticity figures, which we report as the brand's numbers rather than ours. What earns the place is the format: one capsule, thirty days, a fair price to find out whether you notice anything.

  • One capsule a day
  • The blend is named, not hidden
  • A thirty-day box that matches a thirty-day trial
  • Zinc and vitamin C on the list, which is the blemish logic
Texture
Capsules. One a day.
Key ingredients
SkinAx2 (grape seed extract, melon fruit concentrate, zinc citrate, vitamin C) · Amla fruit extract · Pine bark extract · Camu camu extract · Beta-carotene
Fragrance
Unflavoured capsule.

Thirty capsules, thirty days, $45. Judge it at the end of the box, not the first week.

Sakara Beauty Biome Synbiotic Capsule (60 capsules)
04

Sakara Beauty Biome Synbiotic Capsule (60 capsules)

Supplements United States Approx. $65

The synbiotic on the page: probiotics and prebiotics together, six strains named to the code, a branded fruit-and-vegetable blend called Dermaval, and vitamins A, D and E. Sakara's claims run to clarity, firmness and radiance and are made from within, which is the gut-skin argument in capsule form. The strains are listed by name, which most probiotic supplements skip, and the brand is clear that twelve weeks is the test.

  • Strains named to the code, not just 'probiotics'
  • Prebiotic in the same capsule
  • Vitamins A, D and E alongside
  • An honest twelve-week timeline
Texture
Capsules. Two a day with food; the brand suggests twelve weeks.
Key ingredients
Six named probiotic strains, including Bifidobacterium longum ES1 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus SP1 · Prebiotic xylooligosaccharides · Dermaval fruit and vegetable blend · Vitamins A, D and E
Fragrance
Unflavoured capsule.

The one to try if the gut-skin theory is the reason you are here.

  • From the brand whose sunscreens are already on The Shelf

06

LYMA The LYMA Supplement Starter Kit (30 days, 120 capsules)

Supplements United Kingdom Approx. $269

The most expensive supplement on The Shelf, from the brand behind the laser, and the one that publishes every dose in milligrams on the front of the box. Ten ingredients, each at what LYMA calls the studied dose: keratin for hair, turmeric, ashwagandha and saffron for the stress-and-sleep half of the argument, vitamin D at 2,000 IU. The brand's language is confident and we do not repeat it. The printed numbers are why it is here. The price is the price.

Agent Nateur holi (radiance) Beauty From Within Supplement (99 g)
07

Agent Nateur holi (radiance) Beauty From Within Supplement (99 g)

Supplements United States Approx. $58

Two ingredients and nothing else: MSM, the sulphur compound, and a plant-derived ceramide complex, in a powder you stir into water. Ceramides are what the moisturizers on The Shelf put on the skin. This is the version you drink. The brand calls the result radiance and moisture for skin, hair and nails. What we can say is that the list is two lines long, the scoop is a daily ritual rather than a pill, and it mixes into anything except cow's milk, which the brand says works against the MSM.

  • Two ingredients, both named
  • A drink, not a capsule
  • Phytoceramides, the oral version of a moisturizer ingredient
  • No fillers, per the brand
Texture
A fine powder. One scoop stirred into hot or cold water; the brand suggests a slice of lemon for the bitterness.
Key ingredients
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) · Phytoceramide complex
Fragrance
Unflavoured, mildly bitter. Lemon helps.

The minimalist. Add lemon.

Phyto Phytophanère Hair and Nails Dietary Supplement (2-month supply)
08

Phyto Phytophanère Hair and Nails Dietary Supplement (2-month supply)

Supplements France Approx. $60

The French pharmacy hair-and-nails capsule, decades old and still the one people are told to try first. Biotin, B6 and zinc are the vitamin logic; borage, fish and wheat germ oils are the fatty acids; brewer's yeast is the old-fashioned part. Phyto's claims are about hair and nail strength and growth and are the brand's to make. This is the least glamorous product on the page and the one with the longest track record on pharmacy shelves.

  • The classic, and $60 for two months
  • Biotin, B6 and zinc named
  • A four-month course, stated plainly
  • Softgels that are easy to swallow
Texture
Softgel capsules. Two a day with water, ideally in the morning, for a four-month course.
Key ingredients
Biotin · Vitamin B6 · Zinc · Borage seed oil · Fish oil · Wheat germ oil · Vitamin E · Brewer's yeast

Wellbel Women+ Supplement (90 capsules)
09

Wellbel Women+ Supplement (90 capsules)

Supplements United States Approx. $72

The physician-formulated capsule Wellbel makes specifically for women 45 and older, which is a narrower audience than anything else on this page and the reason it is here. Biotin, zinc and selenium are the hair-and-nails base; methylated folate and B12 are the forms the brand chose for absorption; saw palmetto, nettle and bamboo silica are the part written for the years around menopause. Vegan, and the capsules open, so the powder can go into a smoothie.

  • Written for an age group, not everyone
  • Methylated B vitamins
  • Saw palmetto and bamboo silica named
  • Vegan capsule that opens
Texture
Capsules. Three a day with food; they can be opened into a smoothie.
Key ingredients
Biotin · Zinc citrate · Selenium · Vitamin D · Methylated folate and B12 · OptiMSM · Saw palmetto extract · Bamboo silica · Vitamin K2

Sakara Daily Elixir Liquid Multivitamin (473 ml)
10

Sakara Daily Elixir Liquid Multivitamin (473 ml)

Supplements United States Approx. $75

The drinkable one: a full day's multivitamin in a tablespoon, flavoured with lemon verbena and mint, with branded forms of folate, zinc and marine minerals and a whole-food blend of sea moss and spirulina behind them. Sakara's claims cover skin, hair and nails among broader wellness ones, and this is the least skin-specific product on the page on purpose. For a person who has never finished a bottle of capsules, a liquid on the kitchen counter is the format that actually gets taken.

  • A tablespoon, not a handful of pills
  • Named forms of folate and zinc
  • Shelf stable
  • Tastes like a citrus tea
Texture
A liquid. One tablespoon from the cap, neat or in a glass of water. Shelf stable, no fridge.
Key ingredients
25 vitamins and minerals, including Quatrefolic folate, OptiZinc and Aquamin · Sea moss · Spirulina · Antioxidant botanicals
Fragrance
Lemon verbena and mint flavour.
